12 Preludes and Fugues for piano solo
Written in a contemporary style using harmonic language ranging from mild to strong dissonance. The music is virtuosic in places but not in an overt Lisztian manner.
Quite often the fugue that follows the prelude will be a development of material already heard. Whilst the preludes tend to remain within the confines of the musical invention that drives them, the fugues are looser in form. That said, every fugue starts with an exposition and they do utilise all of the common fugal techniques such as imitation, inversions, augmentation, diminution, triple counterpoint, episodic work etc, to varying degrees.
The score is written out to show individual lines. This adds a layer of complexity to performance but does help to clarify the linear aspect.
