String Quartet no.2

'Coloured Riffs'

Three movements, tonal in nature and each based on the idea of riffs, their repetition and building upon them, especially in a non-minimalist way.

The 1st movement is in a kind of song form that starts with a riff in the cello leading to a 'chorus' - itself based on riffs - that occurs a few times as the movement progresses, almost like a rondo. A blues influence might be discerned at times in the harmonic changes as riffs are either developed, decorated or discarded.

The second movement is slow and its riff is in fact a harmonic one. Two repeated chords, or rather two tonal areas are the generative basis for the movement which moves from the lyrical to animated, then climactic and back to lyrical and finally a subdued ending.

An obsession with short rhythmic cells in thirds and the resulting tertian building blocks drives the third piece. The underlying idea is not dissimilar to the technique of alternating harmonic/tonal areas used in the second movement. However, the main difference being that this piece is more 'through composed' as to being more obviously repetitive. The music is quite relentless and although it's not strictly a 'moto perpetuo', it is still a challenge to play.
